Who’s behind Speaker Box?
Marcus Lovell, a renowned Bristol-based DJ, founded and serves as the chief turntablist at Speaker Box.
Marcus’ passion for music began during his school days in the Eighties when he and his friends would exchange mixtapes from legendary Bristol DJ crews like The Wild Bunch (now Massive Attack), FBI, and Def Con. The Hip Hop, R&B, Funk, Soul, and Reggae music he heard on these tapes ignited his desire to start buying records and eventually learn to DJ himself. After saving up, he purchased his first pair of Technics 1200 turntables and, just three weeks later, was spinning tunes at his first house party. From that moment on, he’s never looked back.
Marcus’ DJing career has been marked by numerous achievements. He’s won DJ competitions, supported international bands, laid down scratches for recording artists, hosted a Hip-Hop, Funk, Soul, and Rare Groove radio show, and secured residencies and regular guest spots at nightclubs in and around Bristol.
At the Dojo nightclub, Marcus played a pivotal role in organising the club’s longest-running and most successful Hip Hop, Funk, R&B, and Soul night. This event featured residencies with renowned DJs like Jazzie B (Soul II Soul), Snowboy, and Jody Wisternoff (Way Out West), all of whom remain some of Marcus’ DJ heroes. He also had the privilege of performing sets with some of the DJs he idolised during his school days, including Daddy Gee from Massive Attack.
Amidst this busy schedule, Marcus embarked on a new journey by playing his first wedding—for a Bristol-based TV actor. This success led to an influx of private parties and weddings for international music industry moguls, sporting legends, and members of the national media industry. Recognising the potential of his passion, Marcus decided to turn it into a business, and Speaker Box was born.
Marcus is also signed to the wedding party agency “Wedding Jam” along with the likes of DJ Yoda, Craig Charles and Graeme Park.
