"After we booked Marcus, we saw on his website that he used to DJ at my favourite club when I was a teenager. That first foray into clubbing was seminal, and the wedding was extra fun and special knowing that Marcus had already soundtracked so many good nights in my life. Even the bar staff were dancing behind the bar — 'actually good music, not just the same old wedding playlist.'"
Roots
Anything with a groove.
Soul, Funk, Hip Hop, R&B. The foundations of everything Marcus plays. Not because they're trending — because he's been digging these records since he was a kid. That's not a background detail. It's what your dancefloor can feel.
Where it started
Seventies cop shows and a crate of Funk records.
It started young. Watching Starsky and Hutch, Kojak, Shaft. The soundtracks were all Funk. Isaac Hayes, Lalo Schifrin, Curtis Mayfield. Marcus started buying the records.
Then came Hip Hop, and something clicked. Those records he'd been collecting (the breaks, the basslines, the horn stabs) were the same ones being sampled on hip hop records. The same groove, two decades apart. That connection between eras has never left.
The education
Record shops, bar sets, and learning to read a room.
The years between buying records and playing Dojo's were spent in record shops, in bars, learning. What works early in the night. What works late. What bridges a crowd that doesn't know what it wants yet.
By the time Marcus was a weekly resident at Dojo's, the set was never one genre. Massive Attack into the Stone Roses. Talking Heads into Propellerheads. Anything with a groove, played in the right order, at the right time.
At your wedding
The same ethos. Built around your guests.
The anything-with-a-groove approach is exactly what makes a wedding set work. A room with guests aged 25 to 75 needs music that crosses generations without pandering to anyone. That's not a compromise. It's a skill.
Marcus works from your brief. The music you love, the songs that matter, the stuff you never knew you wanted to hear. Then he does his job: connecting it all into a night that feels like it belongs to you.
The music might span fifty years. The roots make it coherent.
In practice
Not a playlist. A set.
Soul, Funk, Hip Hop and R&B aren't played in separate blocks. They're woven together the way a good night moves. Reading the room, building energy, switching lanes when it needs it. Hear how it sounds before you decide.
