Devon has a bit of everything, Dartmoor estates, coastal cliffs, country houses in hidden valleys, and the wedding venues match. It’s one of the counties I travel to regularly from my base in Bristol, and the drive down is always worth it.
I’m Marcus, the DJ behind Speaker Box. I’ve been DJing weddings and events for nearly twenty years, rooted in Bristol’s club scene but covering the whole South West. Devon is well within range and I’ve played at venues across the county, from the Exe Valley to the South Devon coast.
What Speaker Box Brings to a Devon Wedding
I DJ on Technics turntables with a 20,000-track library. Soul, Funk, Hip Hop, Rare Groove, R&B and beyond, live mixed, reading the room, building the night track by track. No laptop playlists. No microphone. Just music that keeps people dancing.
Every set is different because every couple is different. Before the wedding, we spend proper time going through your music, what you want, what you don’t, and what the night should feel like. On the day, I handle the rest.
The lighting is pre-programmed track by track through Soundswitch, atmospheric, responsive, and designed to work with the venue rather than against it.
Devon Venues I Cover
I’m happy to play at any venue in Devon. A few that come up regularly with couples who’ve booked me or enquired:
- Bovey Castle, an Edwardian manor on a 275-acre Dartmoor estate. Grand without being stiff, and the setting is hard to beat.
- Pynes House, a Georgian country house in the Exe Valley near Exeter, believed to have inspired Barton Park in Sense and Sensibility. Quietly prestigious.
- Tunnels Beaches, accessed through hand-carved Victorian tunnels in the cliffs at Ilfracombe, with a private beach below. There’s nothing else like it.
- Rockbeare Manor, a Grade I listed Regency house in 100 acres near Exeter. Chandeliers, grand staircase, manicured lawns.
- Coombe Trenchard, an Edwardian Arts and Crafts house on the edge of Dartmoor. Only a handful of weddings a year, which says something.
- The Kingston Estate, a Georgian mansion near Totnes accommodating up to 250 guests. One of Devon’s larger high-end venues.
If your venue isn’t on this list, it doesn’t matter, I’ll play anywhere within range and I’m happy to visit the space beforehand.
Travel and Logistics
Devon is further afield than my usual Bristol/Bath/Somerset patch, so travel beyond the included 50-mile round trip is charged at 50p per mile. For most North Devon and Exeter-area venues, the surcharge is modest. South Devon and the coast add a bit more but it’s still straightforward.
I arrive from 5pm and setup takes around 90 minutes. For venues further afield, I’ll factor in the extra travel time and make sure everything runs smoothly.
What couples say
“We and many of our guests literally didn’t leave the dance-floor all night. Bar staff told us it was the best set they’d heard all year.”
“Marcus absolutely smashed it at our wedding. The dance floor was never empty.”
“Marcus was absolutely amazing. He took the kind of music and vibe we wanted and ran with it. The easiest of all recommendations to make for anyone looking for a DJ.”
